Law students beat up conductor, held

City police on Wednesday picked up three law college students on Pallavan Salai for assaulting an MTC bus conductor who insisted that they buy tickets.

After coming to know of the incident, other employees of the MTC registered their protest by stopping buses for about 10 minutes, police said.

MTC Route 21 G was en route to Broadway from Mandaiveli when a gang of about 20 law college students boarded the bus, police said. Bus conductor Sekar asked the students to buy tickets, which led to an altercation between the students and the conductor. Some of the students then began hitting the conductor. They later fled the spot. Meanwhile, bus driver Justim came to Sekar’s rescue and rushed him to the Royapettah Government Hospital.

Based on a complaint lodged by Sekar, three students — Vignesh, Shyam and Suryam — who were caught by other MTC crew members were being quizzed by the police. A case was also registered against the trio.
