Days after the death of a city college student in a car accident on the ECR, four persons, including a student, were injured as a car veered off the road into a ditch and overturned after it hit a milestone while on its way to Mahabalipuram around midnight on Tuesday.
Police said Vignesh (20), a resident of Triplicane and first year student at Sathyabhama University, did not notice the milestone while negotiating a curve when the car reached near Akkarai on the ECR around midnight. The car hit the milestone, went off the road and rolled over into the ditch on the left side of the road. Besides Vignesh, the other occupants Archana (22), a resident of West Mambalam, Bhavana (24), a resident of Adyar, and Vallavan alias Chandrasekar (26), a native of Tuticorin, were injured.
All the four were rushed to a private hospital in Sholinganallur and were reportedly out of danger. Meanwhile, rumours began doing rounds that there was another car plying alongside the one driven by Vignesh and the two cars were racing against each other. However, cops clarified that there was no other car involved and ruled out the possibility of racing.
Adyar Traffic Investigation Inspector Ravikumar told Express that the quartet was headed to Mahabalipuram to enjoy the beach and had plans to return before dawn. “The student who drove the car told us that he lost his attention while driving as he got engrossed in the conversation going on inside the car and he missed the milestone while passing through Akkarai during midnight,” the Inspector said.
He added that all the four were stable and the doctors felt that they would be discharge on Thursday. A case was registered and further investigations were on.
