Ayurveda doctor remanded in nurse rape case

Ambattur Judicial Magistrate Court on Friday remanded in judicial custody an ayurvedic doctor in connection with the alleged rape of a 19-year-old nurse.

A native of Kerala, the woman had lodged a complaint against Dr K R Shijith and Dr Ajil Kumar, both ayurvedic physicians, on July 15, alleging that the duo had sexually assaulted her at the apartment of the former, who had been running the ‘Kerala Ayurvedic Health Centre’ here.

Soon, special teams were formed headed by assistant commissioner of police B Kalitheerthan to apprehend the absconding accused.

A team dispatched to Tiruchy had been interrogating relatives of Ajil Kumar while the other had been monitoring the families of the accused, a police official said.

Sources said that both Shijith and Ajil Kumar fled to Palakkad where they had a brief stay. From there, they moved to Shoranur, in Palakkad District, and finally reached Trivandrum. The duo kept travelling continuously from place to place to evade arrest.

Soon, Shijith decided to part ways with Ajil Kumar after a search operation by the police at his house in Korattur, here. He reached Chennai from Thiruvananthapuram via Madurai and was arrested by police while he was on his way home.

He was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Ambattur which remanded him in judicial custody.

Discarded mobiles

Police sources said that both the accused had discarded their mobile phones and sim-cards to preclude police monitoring their movement. They had used public phones to get in touch with their families.
