Negligence alleged in Alex father-in-law’s death

The brother-in-law of Chhattisgarh IAS officer Alex Paul Menon, who was abducted and later released by Maoists a few months back, lodged a police complaint on Thursday alleging that his father died in a city hospital due to medical negligence. The complainant, TRV Anandarajan, sought action against the hospital management, the consultant and the surgeon. Anandarajan said his father TR Venugopal, a retired chief engineer (zonal manager) of the LIC, was admitted to the hospital for a procedure to remove gall bladder stones. As per the doctor’s advice, a laparoscopic procedure was performed on him.

However, following the procedure, an open surgery was also performed without prior permission and this caused internal bleeding, the complaint said. Venugopal, who was in the hospital for 22 days, was declared dead at 2.45 pm on October 10.
