Sevalaya’s ITI takes first step

Students of Sevalaya can soon learn carpentry, baking, beauty courses and automobile servicing among other things. Foundation stone was laid for a newly-proposed Industrial Training Institute (ITI) building on the premises of Sevalaya’s Kasuva campus here on Tuesday. The proposed building, sponsored by SCOPE International, will have facilities for students to learn variety of vocational courses.

Sevalaya is a charitable organisation that provides free education, boarding  and lodging to orphans and destitute senior citizens. It already has educational facilities for classes up to twelve. “The students need not go searching for higher education. They can make use of Sevalaya’s technical institute for their higher studies, totally free of cost,” said V Muralidharan, founder trustee of Sevalaya.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between SCOPE and Sevalaya, which formally documented various joint projects, volunteer exchange and mutual cooperation between the two. After the ‘bhumi pooja’ for the ITI building, inmates of Sevalaya had an eye-check up conducted by Sankara Nethralaya. Those needing medication, futher consulting and spectacles were provided assistance accordingly. The inmates of the old age home also received new clothes.
