The Election Commission of India on Tuesday began its special summary revision of the electoral rolls in the last such exercise before the Lok Sabha polls.

The process started with the release of the draft electoral rolls by Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar at the Secretariat. The one month drive is aimed at updating the list of voters in the State, which presently stands at 5.16 crore.

Statistics released on Tuesday showed that as of August 30, the electoral rolls of TN contained the names of 2.58 crore males, 2.57 crore females and 2,434 others. Continuous updation between January 11 and August 30 this year has resulted in the addition of 2.4 lakh names (1.2 lakh males, 1.2 lakh females and 40 others). Certain names were deleted due to deaths and duplication of 4.1 lakh names.

The rolls covered 69 per cent of the Tamil Nadu population. The special revision of the rolls is aimed at including the names of those who turn 18 years of age by January 1, 2014
