‘Micromatsuri’, a one-day event, consisting of a series of competitions was organised by the Department of Microbiology in D G Vaishnav College on Wednesday. The event was inaugurated by Dr Lata Sriram, HoD of Microbiology, Madras Medical College. Several academic and co-curricular competitions took place. Over 300 students studying in life science courses from 24 colleges in the city participated in this event. “The aim of the event was to create awareness regarding life sciences among students,” said Jagadeeshwari, organising secretary and faculty at the department. She also said that students nowadays needed to know about conserving energy for a sustainable future.

Several topics that were  relevant in society were chosen as the theme of the competitions. They included bio energy, waste to worth, technology towards 2020, organic farming, etc. Participating students showcased their talents creatively through presentations, paintings, rangoli and short films. Students from the department who organised the event were enthusiastic about having an event that was not strictly academic.  

The department has a post graduate course in microbiology and four other certificate courses.
