SRM Arts and Science College held its 17th graduation day recently. H Devaraj, vice-chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, addressed the graduates. He said that students must update their knowledge.

More than 480 students, including 23 UG and 17 PG rank-holders of the University of Madras, received their degrees on the occasion. Devaraj said that they  were planning to establish an Inter University Centre at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, for teacher education. He added that a sum of `300 crore had been earmarked for this purpose.

He further said that UGC might bestow degree-awarding powers on educational institutions which are atleast 18 years old and have had highest NAAC grade for three consecutive terms.

This, he said, will help autonomous colleges across the nation to award degrees and conduct their own examinations.
