17 Juveniles Flee Remand Home in Chennai Again

CHENNAI: In yet another incident of juveniles escaping observation homes, 17 inmates of a juvenile observation home at Chengalpattu escaped on Sunday. Police sources said the juveniles broke open a grill in the bathroom and fled around 1.30 pm.

Later in the day, police said they had traced two of the 17 and intensified their search to trace the rest.

This is the third incident of juvenile offenders fleeing the Chengalpattu home in the last four months.

"They cut a grill in a bathroom and used bedsheets to escape. The other staff were busy cooking when they managed to slip out," said a police source.

On April 23, nine juveniles in the home escaped, but most of them were later traced. In May 15, one inmate escaped but was traced after a week.

"In most cases, they go home to meet their parents. So we have sent people to check their houses," said a police officer.
