A fashion week for young and upcoming designers and models would make for an interesting display of fresh ideas, thought the Designers Council and Brand Avatar as they went on to conceptualise the Chennai Fashion Week. Providing such a platform for them would not only open doors for new opportunities, but put Chennai on the international map as well, when it comes to fashion, said Karun Raman, choreographer, who is among the organisers.
Speaking at the press meet announcing the same at The Westin Chennai Velachery, on Friday, Karun, along with Hemachandran L, CEO, Brand Avatar, Kumaravel C K, owner of Naturals Unisex Salon, (which is also one of the contributors) and actress Sonia Agarwal, briefed about the two-day event scheduled to take place on July 11 and 12.
Rochelle Rao, who is the face of CFW, feels that this show would put Chennai on the international map. “I will participate in the Chennai Fashion Week and though it has not been finalised as to whose designs I would be wearing to walk the ramp, I will definitely be there to support the show and cheer my friends. Also, the designers of the city have been good for a long time now and one can always see substance in them. They have to be placed in the international arena and this can be achieved through the Chennai Fashion Week,” she said.
The event will showcase the work of seasoned as well as designers along the lines of those from Studio 9696, Mathusha, Indrajit, Sarath Krishnan. The finale on both days, will have designs from Sri Kumaran Silks (one of the partners of CFW) and Ritu Kumar.
In addition to the announcement, there was a preview on the kind of clothes one can expect from event, in which the models who were earlier auditioned and underwent grooming sessions walked the ramp. They wore a diverse range of designs, from the traditional silk saree and kurtas to gowns and even tuxedos!
For the Fashion Week, Kumaravel said that the team from Naturals had created eight different looks. “From the auditions conducted, we chose eight aspiring models and gave them a complete makeover. They will be among those walking the ramp during the Chennai Fashion Week, where we will hopefully make heads turn to the city’s fashion scene.
