CHENNAI: Upset over stiff parental opposition to their love affair, two second year Under Graduate students committed suicide at an isolated spot on the Palaverkadu beach on Thursday. Police said the couple had sent SMSes to their friends about their decision just before consuming the poison.
The students were identified as M Gunasekaran (19) and K Deepa (19), both hailing from villages near Arambakkam in the Tiruvallur district.
While Gunasekaran was studying in a college at Ponneri, Deepa was a student of a college at Washermenpet. “They got introduced while travelling in the train to their colleges. Soon their families found about their relationship. They had apparently compelled them to give up the relationship,” said a police officer.
As the opposition grew, they skipped classes on Thursday and went to the Palaverkadu beach. “By around evening, they had sent the messages to their friends, who alerted the police. Locals who noticed the pair rushed them to hospitals through ambulance,” said the officer.
While Deepa succumbed on Thursday night, Gunasekaran died on Friday morning. The Kattur police have registered a case.
