Identical Triplets

CHENNAI: A woman delivered identical triplets — all girls — by caesarean section, at Saveetha Medical College recently, said hospital staff. The three daughters were born to Mohanapriya, 21. Ebsiban and Kumudam, the doctors at the hospital, told reporters that the infants weighed 1.77 kg to 1.85 kg at birth. While the normal weight of a newborn should be about two kilograms, the doctors said that the condition of all the three babies was good, though they were underweight. Mohanapriya also has a two-year-old boy.

The children were  kept under observation in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Saveetha Medical College. The hospital authorities have decided to keep them in incubator for a week with free treatment and medicine. Twins and triplets have become common over the past few decades because of fertility treatments, but identical triplets are still rare, said doctors.
