CHENNAI:  Sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized a contraband worth `5.20 crore which was smuggled in containers through Chennai Port. Based on inputs, DRI officials tracked two containers shipped from Malaysia in which the goods were hidden.

The seized items included Indonesian clove cigarettes, LED TV sets, home theatre systems, ACs, DVD home theatre systems, soaps, perfumes, and food supplements. “They were concealed in such a way that they could not be easily detected during normal verification by Customs,” said officials.

Subsequently, DRI arrested one Mathivanan and remanded him to judicial custody.

In another incident, DRI sleuths busted a gang in North-Chennai that was engaged in smuggling Amphetamine, a psychotropic drug, to South East Asian countries with the arrest of two persons.

Around 25 kg of the drug worth `2.5 crore in the international market was seized.
