Chennai Central Square may materialise in 3 yrs

The State government is aiming to complete the ambitious Central Square project that is envisaged to change the landscape of the Poonamalle Road stretch.

CHENNAI: The State government is aiming to complete the ambitious Central Square project that is envisaged to change the landscape of the Poonamalle Road stretch near Central railway station in next three years.

It is reliably learnt that the officials are in the process of floating a tender for the project and one of the conditions stipulated is a three-year deadline for the project.

The tender includes designing and building the Central Square, which encompasses important landmarks of Chennai City such as Ripon Building, Victoria Public Hall, Central railway station and three other suburban railway stations around the junction, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital,  and the Ramasamy Mudaliar choultry. It is planned along the lines of Times Square in New York.

The square will also have bus station that can accommodate up to 30 buses and all the public places will be linked through pedestrian subways or covered walkways for easy commuting of public. An underground multi-level parking which will accommodate 1,120 cars as well as 2,000 two-wheelers is also part of the plan. The entire project is estimated to come up at the cost of Rs 389.42 crore. The Buckingham canal, which passes along the stretch, will also be covered for a short stretch and it will landscaped as a pedestrian plaza.
