Power supply yet to turn normal in several areas across Chennai

Even as TANGEDCO announced that low-tension consumers including domestic consumers and schools would be on top of their priority list, power outages were reported in various parts of the city.

CHENNAI: Even as TANGEDCO announced that low-tension consumers including domestic consumers and schools would be on top of their priority list, power outages were reported in various parts of the city.

On the outskirts of the city, residents in Pattabiram and Pazhavanthangal said that they had received power only on Friday night and Saturday morning respectively, almost four days after cyclone Vardah hit the city.

“For four days, we had been sitting in candlelight without access to water,” said V. Elangovan, a resident of Nehru colony, Pazhavanthangal for 15 years. He added that the schools in the locality also suffered from lack of electricity.

In places where power supply had been restored, consumers complained of voltage fluctuations damaging household appliances while many parts of South Chennai suffered power cut for a few hours on Friday evening. Denying that the power outage in South Chennai was for load-shedding, a senior TANGEDCO official said that the outage was only a part of precautionary measures to carry out maintenance activities. However, the city receives only a rationed supply of power presently, with each region receiving power on a rotational basis, said another TANGEDCO official.
