Woman Audi driver mows down carpenter; Cops tight-lipped

Woman techie on Audi mowed down one person on Chennai's IT corridor in the early hours of Saturday

CHENNAI: A young woman techie at the wheel of a luxury car, suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol, hit a 45-year-old carpenter, killing him on the spot on the IT Corridor in the early hours of Saturday. The occupants of the speeding car did not stop until some among the public chased down the vehicle and cornered it a little distance away.

Police are being tight-lipped about the suspected killer, a 26-year-old woman, who is said to be the daughter of an influential businessman. There were two other women in the car with her. No details have been given out about them, either.

The carpenter, Munusamy, was hired to shift the belongings of a house. On Saturday, he had set out from his house early along with two others and was waiting at LB road junction to cross to the other side of the road at around 4.30 am when the Audi driven by the woman IT professional working in a firm in Porur hit him. He was flung to a considerable distance on impact, police said. Munusamy died on the spot.

The car proceeded without stopping, but was chased down by a couple of vehicles that were nearby. Near SRP Tools junction, the car was cornered. Other than the techie who was at the wheel, there were two other women occupants in the vehicle. A police patrol party arrived at the scene soon and took them away.

Police sources said they suspected the driver to have been under the influence of alcohol – she was sent for testing alcohol content in her body, results of which is awaited. A case has been registered at the Guindy police station.

Munusamy, residing in a small rented house near Perungudi, is survived by his wife and two young children.
