CHENNAI: After being rapped by Madras High Court for its failure to curb encroachments, the Market Management Committee (MMC) of Koyambedu Wholesale Market sprung into action and is planning to clear them within the next 45 days.

An MMC official told Express that a team of 30 personnel visited the flower market on Tuesday to clear the encroachments and restore the market to its original plan.

This comes in the wake of the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan on September ordering the authorities to clear the encroachments in the market within three months.

“Already 45 days have passed since the High court has passed the order and we have only 45 days more to clear the encroachments. We are initiating action to clear the them in the flower market,” said MMC sources.

The biggest challenge for the MMC would be to clear encroachments in the fruit and vegetable market. “The service lanes have been encroached and unlicensed private hotels are functioning inside the market. Even many shops have occupied the space. The loading and unloading area has also been encroached,” the sources added.

“It is likely that we will go in for a heavy police security cover to evict the encroachers and return the market to the original architectural plan,” the sources said.
