Police launched three-hour search operation after suspect plunges into Adyar river

CHENNAI: Police and fire service personnel launched a three-hour long rescue operation after an accused wanted in an abduction case allegedly plunged into the Adyar river near Thiru Vi Ka Bridge on Thursday.

According to police, Sudhakar, a suspect in a kidnap case, was absconding and they laid a trap on Thursday evening through one of his close acquaintance.

While Sudhakar did come to the spot as expected at around 4.30 pm, he soon realised the presence of police on the spot and started fleeing. It is said he left behind the car in which he had come and took to the heels. He ran into the river before the police personnel could react.

Fearing that Sudhakar could have drowned, police called the fire service for assistance. Boats were engaged by the fire and rescue services department, to locate the man. But they were unsuccessful throughout the whole evening. As the lights went out, they called off the search operations. However, a police officer said the suspect could have managed to escape by crossing the river. Police sources refused to reveal the details of the case in which Sudhakar was wanted.
