CHENNAI: Meet R Natraj, former DGP-turned coaching centre convenor who is also an MLA of Mylapore. He has started a free coaching centre for UPSC, TNPSC and other competitive exams for those from disadvantaged background.

The classes will be held every weekend at the Corporation Community Hall. Natraj will be taking the classes himself along with PS Raghavan, a former diplomat,V Murali, president of Hindustan Chamber of Commerce, experts and candidates who have recently cleared the exam. Natraj has also tied up with Excell Career India— an IAS/IPS study centre who would send their faculty free of cost.

Although students preparing for all Civil Service Exams can register for classes, the coaching is primarily for students preparing for TNPSC (Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission) exam, which recruits people for the State’s public service

The students will be trained for all the four stages of the exam. Students will have to visit the venue and register themselves for free. Registered students will also be given access to online preparation material.

Natraj aspires to increase the number of training centres by contacting corporation schools that might let him conduct training in their classrooms. He encouraged students, especially women from the State to appear and clear the exam. “If the educated poor decide to be civil servants, it will help their community too. This year, around 59,000 people will be recruited through TNPSC exams. It is a very good opportunity for students to get into public service,” he said.
