Gang attacks Andhra cops near Chennai, flees with man in custody

Police suspect the men to be associated with the brick kiln businessman who helped him escape from the police.

CHENNAI: Four Andhra police personnel who were escorting a businessman to produce him in a court in Guntur district sustained injuries after they were attacked by a 10-member masked gang who rescued the suspect near Tiruttani on Saturday. Police suspect the men to be associated with the brick kiln businessman who helped him escape from the police.

A senior police officer said P Venkateshwaralu and three others had nabbed one Madhan Reddy, 32, who was hiding at Guruvarajapet near Arakkonam and were taking him to Guntur district court.

“As the team reached Tiruttani, they were intercepted by a 10-member masked gang who parked their motorbikes in front of the car and pelted stones and glass bottles at the police vehicle. Meanwhile, two men from the masked gang helped the suspect get off the vehicle and took him along with them on the motorbike secretly,” said the officer.

It was only after all the men dispersed that the team found the suspect missing from the vehicle. The injured policemen underwent treatment at the government hospital in Tiruttani.

Madhan was booked for kidnapping a minor girl from Guntur and settled in Tamil Nadu in 2009. However, the minor girl was rescued later and a charge sheet filed against him.

“However, Madhan never appeared before the court for the case hearing and a special team was formed to trace the suspect. Later, they were informed that the man was hiding at Arakkonam. Following which he was nabbed from his house,” said the officer.

On Saturday, head constable Samson filed a complaint with the Tiruttani police who have launched a search for the unidentified gang.
