CHENNAI: In association with Chennai Breast Centre and Penn Nalam, Madras Mustangs, a fitness enthusiastic group is organising a fundraising ‘Run/Walk’ in Chennai on August 20. You could run, walk or sponsor the event.

The event is organised to help the launch of Chennai Breast Cancer Research Foundation (CBCRF), which is a joint venture by Chennai Breast Centre and Penn Nalam headed by Dr Selvi Radhakrishna and Radhika Santhanakrishnan respectively. The goal of CBCRF is to provide breast cancer care to underprivileged free of cost.

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer despite gender and this is a small step towards supporting a greater cause. We have designed the event in a way that everybody can participate. Over 2,000 people have already registered for the show,” says Radhika Santhanakrihnan, founder of the NGO, Penn Nalam.

Their study says the main reason behind the high mortality rate of this cancer is due to the delay in detection and diagnosis.

They believe that the urgent need in cancer control today is to develop an effective and affordable approach to the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

The launch will have ADGP C Sylendra Babu and actor Lakshmy Ramakrishan as chief guests. “Another main reason for this event is to use this platform to spread awareness on breast cancer, its symptoms and treatment,” she adds.

If you are a senior citizen or a survivor comfortable with short walks, you can participate in the 2 km. Sairam Ramaswamy and Archana Ramanakumar, the organisers of the event from Madras Mustangs, have also arranged breakfast. Participants will be given a goodie bag and a T-shirt. The registration amount is Rs 600 per person.

The event will be held on August 20 from 5 am onwards at Olcott Memorial School, Besant Nagar.
