CHENNAI: The weekend gone by witnessed discussions that burst the myths on the fame of the beauty industry. The 4th edition of cosmo glitz awards was all about daring the multi-billion dollar industry to break the bubbles of fairness and slimness being the beauty quotient of society.

The event comprised of panel discussions on body shaming and focuses on fair skin and body along with the launch of the book, Liposuction — The big fat story authored by Sunitha Raj, a client and employee-cum-CEO of Chennai Plastic Surgery, done by Dr Venkatswami, head surgeon, Apollo's National Institute of Reconstructive Surgery. The panel had in depth discussion about Indians' obsession with being fair and body shamming.

“I think we have to look at the psychological aspect of this because people always want what they don't have. In Russia, people want to be dark and I am too fair in Russia,” says Jane, Russian model and RJ.
Dr S Daniel, professor of psychiatry, stated that it is a pervasive term and has been there for centuries. “The idea of being fair and slim is equated with being pretty. This exists deep inside the Indian context and that's where the market is,” he added.

The book Liposuction — The big fat story comprises of real life stories of clients who had undergone liposuction. “There is a common belief among people that liposuction helps you lose weight. But, in fact, liposuction is to trim the areas of the body that are resistant to weight loss. But, there are lobbies who take advantage of this misinformation. I want to inform people about the entire process of liposuction and explain why it is not for everyone,” said Sunitha when asked about her first book.

The award ceremony was held after the book launch where they celebrated the success stories of burn survivors and recognised citizens who make a difference in society.
