Popular choirs come together to welcome Christmas

The Madras Christian College Alumni Association invoked the season of joy with a bigger-than-ever carol extravaganza at the MCC school grounds on Monday.

CHENNAI: The Madras Christian College Alumni Association invoked the season of joy with a bigger-than-ever carol extravaganza at the MCC school grounds on Monday.  The alumni carol service which was cancelled for the last two years because of Cyclone Vardah (2016) and the floods in 2015, has come back bigger and better in its 18th edition.

This year’s edition features music transcending genres and boasts a 10,000 MW audio system and massive 70X30 stage. “This year’s carol service was a much awaited one; and we have risen to the occasion,” said Ravi Santhosam, one of the organisers.“The carol concert is our gift to Chennai and Chennaiites to spread the meaning of Christmas and celebrate togetherness. We have some of the best choirs and musical groups in one concert,” said Vinu Mammen, president, alumni association.

The two-day concert, which was free for all, saw the renowned Madras Musical Association symphony orchestra giving the opening performance. They will perform first on Tuesday also.Both the MCC school and college choir presented popular christmas numbers. Bella Voce, an all women crew from the city made their debut at the carol concert and won the hearts of the audience.  “This is the best beginning we could hope for,” said Jayanthi, conductor of Bella Voce. Harmonics and Ava were other the other choirs that performed on Monday.

The Women’s Christian College choir, Crochets and Quavers, St Thomas Orthodox choir and North East Christian Fellowship choir will take the stage on Tuesday.
