CHENNAI: Even as Governor Banwarilal Purohit, seemingly undeterred by criticism from several quarters, went ahead with his inspection programme in Cuddalore on Friday, opposition parties upped the ante with the Congress and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) throwing their weight behind the DMK in launching agitations wherever the Governor visited.

Accusing the Governor attempting to infringe upon the powers of the State government and undermining the principle of federalism, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president S Thirunavukkarasar said his partymen would join the DMK stir against the Governor’s outreach programme.
“The Governor is not respecting the principle of federalism. He has crossed his limits in holding review meetings and inspection. So, we will join the DMK in protesting against his action,” Thirunavukkarasar announced.

Ruing that Banwarilal Purohit’s act would set a wrong precedent, VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan accused him of working in such a way that the rights of the State were infringed upon. He said, “It is agonising to note that the action of the Governor will set a wrong precedent. Holding review meetings and inspecting utilities are against the State autonomy.”

Thirumavalavan said if the Governor persisted in his action, his partymen would rally behind the DMK, which showed black flags to the Governor on Friday.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko too slammed Banwarilal Purohit, asking whether he was holding a rehearsal for the President’s rule in the State. “What does he get to do in Cuddalore? No Governor has ever acted in such a manner in the post-Independence era,” he said.

Vaiko said, “Has Tamil Nadu become helpless? Is it a hunting ground? Or an unprotected farm? Are you rehearsing for the Governor’s rule? Mr Purohit, you are crossing your limits.”

Beginning his review meeting in Coimbatore, subsequently the Governor visited Tirupur, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari before touring Cuddalore.
