The University of Madras may soon introduce a new undergraduate programme, BSc in Information Technology, under choice-based credit system in the colleges affiliated to it.

CHENNAI: The University of Madras may soon introduce a new undergraduate programme, BSc in Information Technology, under choice-based credit system in the colleges affiliated to it. The academic council of the university on Saturday approved the proposal put forth by the Board of Studies of Computer Science.

The proposal was accepted by the syndicate last November and with the nod of the academic council, the university officials hope the new course could be introduced from the 2017-18 academic year.

“Next month there will be a senate meeting (highest decision-making body) and we will get the approval. Then the courses can be started from the upcoming academic year itself,” said University registrar P David Jawahar.

The academic council meeting was chaired by Professor Thangam Menon, head of the department of Microbiology, since the vice-chancellor post was lying vacant for months and the higher education department secretary, who chairs the meeting in the absence of vice chancellor, was also on a long leave. Sources said all the participants unanimously agreed for Menon to chair the meeting since she is the senior most faculty member in the university.

The council also approved inclusion of a new paper (Computer-based statistical analysis) and revision of syllabus for MSc (Actuarial Science) course. Also approved was the revised scheme of examination and syllabus for MSc Mathematics in affiliated colleges with effect from 2017-18.
