Mixing two genres of music into one song is no small feat. Sid Sriram is known for his unique rendition-weaving carnatic and R&B elements together. Ahead of his performance at IIT Madras cultural fest Saarang on Sunday, we get in touch with the Thalli pogathey singer.

Sid started out through YouTube videos, which gained him a good fan base globally. He got his break after his idol AR Rahman discovered him. “It was a dream come true to work with A R sir. He has been my hero since I was a child. His music has been the soundtrack to my life through the years. I’ve learned so much from him on music and life.” Since his debut track Adiye in Mani Ratnam’s Kadal (2013), the vocal acrobat has worked with Anirudh in Yennai Maatrum Kadhale and voiced songs like Yennodu Nee Irundhal, Mei Nigara, and Nee Tholaindhaayo.

Talking about his upcoming album ‘Insomniac Season’ he says, “I have been working on this album for past two years with producer DJ Khalil. The tracks mostly are in English. It will release early this year.”
Every songwriting experience is a new journey, and you never  know what turn it’ll take; that’s what makes it so exciting.” So what does he do to maintain his vocals? “I practice for an hour every morning and a couple of hours later in the day. As exciting as performing and recording is, none of it would be possible without consistent hard work.”
