Anna University conducts 13th Graduation Day

A total of 4,392 students graduated from the university. Sivathanu Pillai, a distinguished professor at ISRO was the chief guest for the event.

CHENNAI: Anna University conducted its 13th Graduation Day for College of Engineering Guindy, Ac Tech, Madras Institute of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning on Saturday with Sivathanu Pillai, a distinguished professor at ISRO, as the chief guest.

A total of 4,392 students have graduated: 31 MS Research scholars and 4361 from the departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and Humanities and Management. The total number of graduates receiving certificates in person was 3449 and that of graduates receiving certificates in absentia was 262. There were 102 gold medallists and 31 rank-holders. The certificates will have signature of Higher Education Secretary Sunil Paliwal in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor.

Reading the annual report of the university, Registrar S Ganesan said that 796 research papers had been published in the international journals and 37 papers published in the national journals. Based on the citation the university stands second in India. By way of application for research, the university stands sixth in India and first in Tamil Nadu. “A sum of `10 Lakh has been granted to 13 departments to conduct seminars.

Eight faculty members have attended international conferences. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu inaugurated modern classroom complex for the Department of Textile Technology on the AC Tech campus on March 4 at the cost of `10 crore,” he said adding that 1200 students got placed in various companies. A sum of `10 crore was received from the DST, UGC, DPT  for the year 2016 to implement various schemes and programmes.

Sivathanu Pillai spoke, encouraging the students and saying that they were going to shine in future. “Fundamental subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology have become increasingly dependent on each other. We need to use fusion technology to bring in millions of Helium 3 available in Moon and Mars and become more innovative. Students are the makers of India and they should do their work with righteousness and perseverance,” he said.
