Only 2 mins for railway police stations to inform higher authorities about crimes

The information relating to any kind of crime including dacoity, robbery and unnatural deaths also to be reported.

CHENNAI: Railway police stations in the State have been instructed to inform higher authorities of crimes, within two minutes of their becoming aware of the incidents.

A circular to all 45 stations on Friday said that information relating to crimes, including dacoity, robbery and murder, must be immediately relayed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police (Railways).
Other crimes such as cases under CrPC section 174 (unnatural deaths) will also need to be conveyed.
The mode of communication within 120 seconds can either be through telephone or directly approaching the IGP office in Chennai.

When contacted, a senior railway police officer said, “This move will ensure that all registered complaints are promptly taken to the notice of higher authorities.”
This assumes significance as timely and prompt information to higher authorities is seen crucial to take suitable action.

Notably, this was seen in the immediate aftermath of the murder of techie Swathi at the Nungambakkam Railway Station last year when there was some delay in response from police.

Another benefit is to improve the rate of conviction for crimes in railway premises. The officer said the rate of conviction, which at present is just over 30 per cent, can go up due to this. “It will help the investigating authorities to be guided by the higher authority.

They can also be given confidence,” the officer said. He added that this was not the case earlier as juniors seldom had the chance to present their cases, especially minor ones, to higher ups, unless specifically asked.
