CHENNAI: Three Molotov cocktails (bottles filled with kerosene and liquor) were hurled at the Teynampet police station on Anna Salai in the wee hours of Thursday. Police officers suspect it was the handiwork of local gangs and ruled out the involvement of extremists.

Around 4 am, three bottles filled with kerosene and liquor were hurled inside the police station area. Two of the bottles were lit and went up in flames, but no property was damaged or casualty reported.

Senior police officers, including Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan, visited the spot and held enquiries.

“Two men came by a motorbike around 4.10 am and hurled the bottles at the entrance. Passersby saw the flames and alerted the police present inside the station. The police in the station smothered the fire and informed the senior police officers,” said a police personnel attached to the station.

Officers from the intelligence wings dealing with fundamentalists and extremists also visited the station.
“There are four CCTV cameras in the premises. Two of them are non-functional and the footage from the other two are not clear enough to identify the miscreants or the vehicle number,” said an officer.

Meanwhile, a few police sources suspect the involvement of a few persons whose case was handled by the station recently. “A week ago there was one case which was handled in the station and either of the two parties involved in the dispute could have carried out the attack,” said a police source.

“We have formed six special teams to probe the case,” said a senior police officer who denied a version that the gang had left behind a gun at the station entrance.
