CHENNAI: The Chennai and Mumbai ports, and the Inland Container Depot in Tughlaqabad, New Delhi, are now under the radar of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), after a tip-off that counterfeit currency — including `500 and `2,000 notes — has reached the country’s shores. Container cargo in these three places is being screened, according to sources.

The movement of out-bound cargo from the Chennai Port had been hit since Friday night, as DRI sleuths conducted searches there, said sources, adding that raids are on at multiple locations across the country, including the Mumbai Port and the Inland Container Depot in Tughlaqabad.

Confirming that operations were hit between Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Chennai, a top port official told Express, “A portion of the cargo has been cleared and operations have been partially resumed.” However, DRI officials remained tight-lipped.

Though a senior official of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai, said he was unaware of any such checks and that container movement at the port was as usual, other reports from the city suggested that raids had been conducted by DRI officials.
