Chennai, Bengal police sniff around, but fail to find Justice Karnan
CHENNAI: A team of police personnel from West Bengal, led by a DGP rank officer, had a tour of Chennai and also the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border while on a futile search for Kolkata High Court judge Justice C S Karnan, after the Supreme Court awarded him six months prison sentence on charges of defamation.
The Bengal team, led by DGP (Home Guards) Ravi Kannojia ADGP (Armed Police) Ranvir Kumar, DIG Dipankar Bhattacharya, and deputy commissioner C Sudhakar among others landed in Chennai around 11 am. They had a meeting with City Police Commissioner Karan Singha for an hour. Singha deputed a team headed by an assistant commissioner to assist the Bengal team.
Justice Karnan had addressed the media at the government guesthouse at Chepauk on Tuesday and the official car was parked there, making people believe that he was staying there. However, it came to light only this morning that he had left by another vehicle.
Meanwhile, at 11 am, the executive officer of Sri Kalahasti temple, D Bramarambha, received a fax informing that the judge would visit the temple. Soon, there was a heavy posse of police and media, waiting for Karnan who was expected by 4 pm.
Around 4 pm, three officers from West Bengal left for Andhra along with the Tamil Nadu team. They reached Sulurpet check post a couple of hours later, where they conducted enquiry with the police officials posted there. They then headed to Tada police station, but returned to Chennai.
Sources told Express they were carrying mobile tracking device to monitor the judge’s movement. “We are searching for him everywhere,” said a senior officer on the team, adding that they have sent personnel to all locations where Karnan could be present.
