Kovai heart beats for 16-year-old in Chennai

A heart harvested from a young man, who was declared brain dead by doctors in a private hospital in Coimbatore, was airlifted by a team of doctors from Chennai and transplanted on a 16-year-old boy.

CHENNAI: A heart harvested from a young man, who was declared brain dead by doctors in a private hospital in Coimbatore, was airlifted by a team of doctors from Chennai and transplanted on a 16 -year-old  boy who was suffering with end stage heart disease, on Wednesday.

According to Fortis Malar Hospital, a team of doctors rushed to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital in Coimbatore after they received the message about availability of the organ on Tuesday.

The donor was Navaneeth, a 22-year-old from Coimbatore, who met with a road accident on Monday and suffered severe head injury. He did not respond to treatment. The family came forward to donate the organs.

Doctors harvested the organ and started from Coimbatore in a commercial airliner around 11.10 am. They landed in Chennai at 11.40 am, reached the hospital by 12.05 pm and transplanted the organ on the youngster.
