CHENNAI: A police inspector has been placed under suspension by higher officials after he refused to register a chain snatching complaint filed by a woman citing jurisdiction issues.

Last Wednesday night, Helen Kumari (30) (name changed) of Padi was riding back home after work at a software firm in Porur. At around 9-30 pm, when she was near Nolambur Bridge, two men on a high end bike pulled up beside Helen’s scooter. “They tried to pull her chain, which she resisted. But she lost control of the vehicle and fell down on the road, after which the two snatched her gold chain and escaped,” a senior police officer told Express.

The victim approached the Thiruverkadu police station to lodge a complaint. But police inspector D Jayachandran did not accept it, saying the incident did not happen under his jurisdiction. The issue went to police commissioner A K Viswanathan, who asked for a report from the officer concerned. After preliminary inquiry, orders were issued suspending Jayachandran.
