Apex court judge bats for better education

Supreme Court judge Justice Jasti Chelameswar on Monday expressed concern over the quality of education system in India and lamented that it lacks purity in inculcating basic societal values to young

CHENNAI:Supreme Court judge Justice Jasti Chelameswar on Monday expressed concern over the quality of education system in India and lamented that it lacks purity in inculcating basic societal values to young minds, also stressing on the need for institutional reform.

In the city to inaugurate the newly built Vedanta Academy in Vanagaram, he pointed out that for a country which has population of 1.3 billion, education becomes the focal point. “Without education no progress is possible, but one must not confuse education with dumping information in child’s mind. Education is something which is comprehensive and tells about the character. The current education system should get its priorities straight,” he said.

He argued that the portrayal of violence in popular culture has nothing to do with problems in the society. “I haven’t seen any movie recently that advocated eve-teasing or propagated any form of violence; the problems in the society are only because of holes in the education system. Core societal values should be inculcated among the children from a young age. I don’t know how much emphasis the present system is putting on this,” he added.
