Chennai traffic violators: 60 days, Rs 2.68 crore in e-fine

Hardly 60 days after the city police implemented cashless transaction to collect fine from traffic violators, police have collected around Rs 2.68 crore.

CHENNAI: Hardly 60 days after the city police implemented cashless transaction to collect fine from traffic violators, police have collected around `2.68 crore in as many as 2.65 lakh cases, registered under the Motor Vehicle Act. On May 10, this year, city traffic police introduced cashless transaction to ensure transparency and avoid corruption. All the payments were to be made digitally through debit/ credit cards, Paytm or the customised SBI online application.

According to data available with the city police from May 10 to July 1, of the 2.65 lakh cases, 37, 273 cases were booked for signal violation. Around 37,158 cases have been booked for not wearing helmet. The traffic police book cases under 31 sections including over speed, traffic violation, over height of the vehicle, dazzling headlight, defective number plate, without seat belt. A senior police officer said, this facility is not applicable for cases booked under drunken driving.

For this, the fine will be collected in court as the medical documents should be submitted. So far 7,564 cases have been booked under drunken driving. Violators can choose their mode of payment. Those who want to pay cash can do so at the nearest post office or e-seva centre within 48 hours and produce the receipt to the nearest traffic official. “We were surprised to see that in two months nearly 90 percent of the violators chose to go cashless,” said A Arun, Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic). After the city police were equipped with the POS machines, the traffic violators were allowed to swipe their cards.
