Minister for Fisheries D Jayakumar warns against smear campaign

The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday issued a warning against misinformation campaign over the procurement of eggs for nutritious meals scheme in government-run schools in the state.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday issued a warning against misinformation campaign over the procurement of eggs for nutritious meals scheme in government-run schools in the State.

Without referring to the name of senior BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Finance, Road Transport and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan, who had alleged a `5,000-crore scam, Minister for Fisheries and senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar stated that levelling baseless allegations should be immediately stopped.

“As many as 58 lakh children are taking eggs in government schools under the nutritious meals scheme.
There are no irregularities in procuring eggs. People in power at the Centre should stop making baseless allegations or else should have to face the consequences,” he told reporters here on Sunday after paying tributes to the late leader K Kamaraj.

Jayakumar added that the Income Tax department had raided the premises of the contractor of eggs for alleged tax evasion but it did not mean there were irregularities in supplying eggs to the schools.
Referring to the issue of formalin-laced fishes, Jayakumar said people should not be afraid of taking fishes because tests had revealed that there were no samples of formalin in marine food.
