CHENNAI: Two murders were reported in the city on Friday night and police arrested three men for allegedly killing a woman.

In the first incident, a 29-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death by a seven-member gang owing to previous enmity.

Police said Siva of Mylapore worked as a car driver. On Friday, he was standing near the bus depot at Mandaveli talking to his friend, when the gang intercepted him. The men attacked him and Siva tried to escape, but the men chased him and hacked him to death,” said a police source.

On information, police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the government hospital at Royapettah for post-mortem. A case has been registered and an investigation is on. Police said Siva had cases pending against him.

In the other case, three men allegedly killed a woman and injured her relative in a fit of rage at Royapuram on Friday night. The trio has been arrested.

Police said, Mary, 40, resided at housing board quarters at Royapuram and her relatives Merlin and Prem lived nearby.

“On Friday morning, Mary had got into a fight with her neighbour Vinod,  28. Later, she filed a complaint with police who called and warned him. Vinod’s brother Tamil Selvan, 24, and his friend Shankar, 28, went to Mary’s house to threaten her. Mary called for help and Merlin and Prem went to her rescue. Meanwhile, Vinod also reached the house. He allegedly stabbed Mary and Merlin. The trio later escaped, said a police source."

Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and took the two to Stanley Hospital where Mary was declared ‘brought dead’. Merlin is undergoing treatment.

Royapuram police arrested the three men who were later remanded to judicial custody.
