Centre orders to disaffiliate schools if not following NCERT syllabus

CHENNAI : Following a direction from the Madras High Court, the Centre has directed the state governments and the Union Territories in the country to disaffiliate the schools, which do not use the syllabus and subjects recommended by the NCERT in Bengaluru for classes I to V.A submission to this effect was made by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development before Justice N Kirubakaran on Monday.

Necessary instructions have been given to the governments through a communication dated October 5, the Ministry added.The instructions included no home-work theory for children studying in classes 1 and 2.
The submissions were made on the writ petition moved by advocate M Purushothaman, praying for a direction to the CBSE schools to follow only the NCERT syllabus and not to give homework up to class 2 students.

As per the communication, the governments are mandated to formulate “children school bag policy” to reduce the weight of the bags in line with the guidelines issued by the governments of Telangana or Maharashtra.In addition, the State and UTs have been directed to form special squads to hold surprise inspections and prevent use of non-prescribed books. 

The judge was also told that a national level committee, headed by Ranjana Arora, Department Head of Curriculum Development and Research in School and Teacher Education and Teacher Professional Development of the NCERT for framing policy on children school bag, has been constituted.
Further hearing stands adjourned till October 24.
