Kite's ‘manja’ injures man; two arrested

In July, 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned the use of ‘Chinese’ kite strings made of nylon or any synthetic material, which is non-biodegradable.

CHENNAI: A 24-year-old man riding a motorcycle along with his friend was injured after a kite’s ‘manja’ thread slit his throat near Vyasarapadi on Thursday. Police arrested two persons including a juvenile on Sunday in this connection.

Police said Logesh Kumar, a resident of Kolathur, on Thursday afternoon went along with his friend to watch a movie.  “While they were returning, near the Dr Ambedkar Law College at Vyasarpadi, Logesh felt a sting near his neck and stopped the bike,” said a police officer.

Only after he got off the bike did he realise that a manja kite thread had slit his throat. His friend immediately rushed him to Stanley hospital where he underwent treatment and was discharged a day later.
However, after he returned home, he felt uneasy and had breathlessness and is now undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Meanwhile, the Otteri police who registered a complaint, arrested one Naveen Kumar, 18, from Pulianthope and his 16-year-old friend had been admitted to the government observation home for flying the kite.

It may be noted that in July, 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned the use of ‘Chinese’ kite strings made of nylon or any synthetic material, which is non-biodegradable.
