Seven-year-old rock band Boomerang brings music from the North East to the city

Hailing from the hills of Aizwal in Mizoram, band Boomerang have come a long way in establishing themselves as a main stream band in India. Established as a band in 2006, they have gone on to provide several hit numbers and have also recently released their extended play (EP) ‘Rhythm of a Revolution’. Currently working on a full-length album, the band was in the city for a gig at Hard Rock Cafe on Thursday.

“We have been playing music for many years now but we officially became a band in 2006. We broke the jinx that a band from the North East cannot make it to mainstream music. While there is a lot of talent in the North East, there is a dearth of platforms for the people to express and represent their music as they feel disconnected from the rest of the country,” shared Trigam Mukherjee, the manager of the band.

Speaking more about their music, he said, “The band consists of four members – Atea on the vocals, Boom on the lead guitar, Joshua on the bass and RS on the drums. Our music has a bit of everything in it. It’s a beautiful mix of a lot genres. We call our music ‘Junk music’ since it contains everything from Jazz to funk to rock.”

Having played different kinds of music from several genres, one wonders if there is any track close which is special to the band. “A few tracks have been taken up very well. For example, one of the songs called Stella reached the VH1 top 10 this year and was in very distinguished company,” said Trigam.

Divulging more about preparation, he said it was important for the musicians to be mentally prepared more than anything else. “As far as preparation for a gig goes, they need to be mentally ready to hit the stage. For us, the big rush is when we hit the stage. No matter how much you practise and prepare, once you hit the stage, the adrenaline and the injection you receive is something else,” he shared.

Coming to Hyderabad for the first time, the band is excited about the visit. “Hyderabad is such a beautiful city. It is one of those places every rock band wants to go to. We have visited Bengaluru before but this is the first time we have gotten the opportunity to come here and we are simply ecstatic to be here,” he added.
