The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has prepared a comprehensive action plan for development of the roads to maintain them in a perfect shape, as well as footpaths, median divider, greenery, storm water drains and laying of common cable ducts, etc on either side of the roads for the convenience of the citizens.

Under Phase-1 of the comprehensive action plan for road development, nearly Rs 250 crore have been earmarked, the list of roads are being finalised and works would begin shortly, GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar said.

The GHMC through Superintendent Engineers and Zonal Commissioners has submitted the list of 55 to 60 damage-prone main roads and most used roads a few days ago and steps are being taken to finalise them. Once the road list is finalised, the corporation would invite tenders for implementing the works.

GHMC officials said that under the comprehensive action plan for development of roads about 109 km of roads have been identified  in all the 18 circles of the GHMC.

The damage-prone roads would be laid with concrete cement to ensure a longer life. Before laying the CC roads, steps would be taken to see that storm water drains, water stagnation points, sewage overflows, water leakages, common cable duct system are in place to avoid future road cuttings. Facilities would be provided on both the sides of the roads.

Of the 109 km, about 39-40 km have been identified for recarpeting, footpath repairs (29 km), divider repairs (9 km), table drain repairs (34 km), water stagnation points (56), sewage overflows/water leakages (54) and painting of dividers (24 km), etc.

The GHMC is identifying roads in coordination with the HMWS&SB, APCPDCL, BSNL and other cable companies who are looking after the cable work, an action plan for 150 to 200 km stretch is being prepared to take up underground duct works for laying of cable and other underground repairing works.

The GHMC will be asking all the concerned departments to take up road repairing works in stipulated time and there after the GHMC will not issue permissions for road cutting purposes for a few years.

A few months ago Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy took the officials to task for the damaged roads in the GHMC area. ‘’What are you doing to solve this problem? I want a comprehensive road action plan. The GHMC should come out with an action plan in this regard. I also want to know how much fund is required. This cannot go on like this,” he said.
