PR department expects big funding

Panchayat Raj department is expecting huge funds from the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yogana.

Finance minister P Chidambaram has allocated about Rs 21,000 crore for PMSY in the budget. Under this scheme, the state got Rs 4,900 crore from 2000 to 2012, in the first phase.

The panchayat raj department has formed 21,000 km new roads in rural areas in the state with the PMSY funds.

Panchayat raj engineer-in-chief CVS Rama Murthy said the Central government has assured that more funds would be allotted in the second phase to states where funds were utilised properly during the first phase. The department is planning to seek Rs 3,000 crore for the next four years and if the Centre allocates adequate funds, about 5,000 km of rural roads will be upgraded in the state, he said.
