GHMC to Have Separate Circle for Maintenance of Main Roads

HYDERABAD:The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will soon have a separate ‘Main Road Circle’ for day-to-day maintenance of about 1,000 km main arterial roads in corporation limits.

The roads include municipal, R&B and National Highways. A few days ago, the state government had issued orders entrusting maintenance of all the 240 km of R&B roads falling in Greater Hyderabad to GHMC.

GHMC special officer Somesh Kumar wanted to bring all the main roads under one command to be named as Main Road Circle. The MR circle will be under the supervision either GHMC special officer or a nodal officer to be appointed by the commissioner.

The day-to-day monitoring of main road circle will be looked after by a superintendent engineer, four executive engineers and assistant engineers. Staff from other wings of GHMC like town planning, urban biodiversity, street lighting, health and sanitation with enforcement cell will be attached to the new circle.

The main task of the MRC is to take care of road maintenance, road recarpeting, road repairs, pot holes fillings etc from time to time and take remedial measures immediately whenever bad roads complaints are received.

Any encroachments found on main roads or on footpaths will be removed by the MR Circle and see that main roads do not have any obstructions to free flow of traffic.

NO MANUAL SWEEPING: Also no manual sweeping will be allowed by sweepers. All the identified mains roads will be swept by  machines only.

GHMC is to hand over the maintenance of pothole-filling of arterial and sub-arterial roads in GHMC to private firms on annual maintenance basis. Recently, the GHMC has floated tenders for maintenance of 1,250 km length of roads; each zone will have 250 km main roads. GHMC wants to undertake pothole-filling and crack-sealing on various main roads in Greater Hyderabad by mechanical means using state-of-the-art machines. This project is one of the important projects for improving the traffic conditions in Hyderabad and provide smooth ride for passengers and public at present and in future.GHMC officials told Express that if the MR Circle found any pothole or cracks in roads, the unit should direct the private firms to whom the maintenance would be allotted to fill and rectify them in a span of 24 hours.
