Engineering student of MJ college hit by speeding cab; demand for foot overbridge outside college in Banjara Hills pending for over 2 years

HYDERABAD: A degree student of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology in Banjara Hills was injured in hit-and-run case by a speeding cab as she was crossing the road to enter the college on Friday morning. The spot was just a few meters away from the gruesome accident on Banjara Hills Road no 2 road where 10-year-old P Ramya along her uncle and grandfather lost their lives after a car driven by drunk youth rammed them a month ago.

Incidentally, the college security guards and students have been demanding a Foot  overbridge (FoB) outside the college gate for couple of years now. Friday’s incident, according to them, is an addition to close to a dozen accidents at the spot. Students took out a massive rally on the road to stress their demand.

The Computer Science engineering student, Rahila Khan, who got down from a bus coming from Nagarjuna circle at 9.30 am was hit by the cab moving towards Begumpet. According to students who witnessed the accident, the cab driver who was driving a Toyota Etios did not stop even as the girl flew in the air and fell down. “We usually have four college bouncers at the gate assisting students at the gate. on Friday, they chased the cab and caught the driver and handed him over to the police,” said Srikar, a third year mechanical engineering student. The girl was taken to a private hospital and later discharged.

Md Moosa Khan, head of security at the college, added, “20,000 students use this gate between 8.30 am and 4.15 pm. Its a blind curve and it becomes very difficult for us to conrol traffic during peak traffic hours.”
