Hyderabad building collapse: Ex-GHMC official and chain man arrested

The tax inspector extorted money from the builder to manage other civic officials.

HYDERABAD: A former tax inspector of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and a chain man (supervisor in charge of monitoring illegal constructions) have been arrested by the Gachibowli police in connection with the Nanakramguda building collapse case. The tax inspector was earlier caught by the police in a mujra party at Khanamet in Cyberabad early this year.

The police on Monday said that during investigation, it was found that the tax inspector Sanjay Kumar alias Thakur Sanjay, who is not in duty now, extorted money from builder Satyanarayana Singh to manage other GHMC officials.

“In February this year, Sanjay Kumar noticed the violations done by Satyanarayana Singh. Though it was not his jurisdiction, he demanded `5 lakh and took `1.1 lakh. Later, he was caught in a mujra party and was suspended,” said the Cyberabad police.

Another GHMC employee, B Narahari, who works as a chain man noticed the violations and questioned Satyanarayana Singh. When Satyanarayana said that he knows higher officials of GHMC and he will handle the situation through them, Narahari did not react.

Though they were aware of the risk, they kept quite and did not complain with the authorities concerned to prevent the illegal construction, which has now claimed 11 lives.

The duo has been arrested and sent to judicial remand and further investigation is still on, police said.
