12-year-old Harshitha dies of liver failure

HYDERABAD: The 12-year-old, Harshitha, whose parents requested Euthanasia for their child in July, died on Sunday from cardiac arrest. Harshita suffered from jaundice and parents were informed by doctors that she required a liver transplantation.

However, her mother N Shyamala requested Euthanasia since they could not afford the cost of transplantation. Earlier, Harshita was admitted at CARE Hospitals, and on Sunday too, she was taken there. A press release by the medical superintendent of the hospital stated that she was admitted in the early hours in ICU liver failure. “Within minutes of of patient arriving at ICU, treatment to improve the clotting started. However, her consciousness deteriorated.

Around 8.30 am. Despite supporting her heart, lungs for one-hour with blood products and other drugs, she had a cardiac arrest and could not be revived,” as per the press note. After Harshitha’s death, family members reportedly staged a protest at the hospital.
