‘Don’t yield to pressure from corporators’, says senior Hyderabad cops

HYDERABAD: During last month’s Ganesh immersion processions, a clash took place between two groups in the Old City leading to a law and order problem. The local corporator intervened and directed the local police to act in a partisan manner and let his supporters go scot-free.

The local policemen bowed to the pressure of the elected representative and when the situation was just about to turn worse, higher officials reached the troublesome area and brought the situation to normalcy. Two inspectors were later transferred for their negligence leading to tension in the area.

Similarly, a couple (both majors) were in love for more than two years. They hail from different communities. The couple eloped and got married against the wishes of their parents. The local corporator called the inspector concerned with a demand that a case be registered against the boy. The girl is the daughter of one of the corporator’s staff.

Even as the inspector made it clear that the duo are majors and are in love with each other, the corporator allegedly brought pressure on police to register a kidnap case falsely.

These are some of the instances where some corporators are found to be interfering in various law and order issues and influencing policing.

With this, the higher officials have reportedly directed the Deputy Commissioner’s (DCPs), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACPs) and Inspectors not to budge to the pressure from Corporators and perform duties as per law, sources said.

Higher officials of the three police commissionerates - Rachakonda, Cyberabad and Hyderabad - have conducted reviews with the policemen recently over the issue.

“During the meeting, number of Inspectors have brought to the notice of the senior officails the pressure exerted by corporators and also complained about Corporators who are directly involved in dealing with such cases.

Inspectors have also explained the corporators’ involvement in law and order issues,’’ a senior police officer, who attended the meeting, told Express.

Taking serious note of the issue, police officials directed their men to be strict in registering cases, investigation and coordination with the higher ups.

If any Corporator is involved in bringing pressure on police officials, the police have to pass the message to headquarters immediately.

The higher officials, however, have asked the police officials to be friendly with the people as well as political leaders in order to maintain community policing.
