Ameerpet-Greenlands sewer line on the verge of collapse in Hyderabad

GHMC to act after water board survey reveals pipeline in need of urgent repair

HYDERABAD: The mains of the trunk sewer, laid from Divyasakhti Apartments, Ameerpet-Greenlands, to the GHMC head office, near Liberty (5.5 km) may collapse at different places as the old sewer pipeline was laid more than 20 years ago and needs immediate repair.

Last month, a portion of 1600/1800 mm dia trunk sewer main collapsed in front of the NTR Gardens on NTR Marg Road, resulting in closure of the road for a few days, leading to traffic snarls.
Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao directed Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to carry out a study of the prevailing condition of the existing trunk sewer line to avoid such incidents in near future.

To assess the condition of trunk sewer main laid from Ameerpet-Greenlands to GHMC Head office, HMWS&SB Managing Director M Dana Kishore entrusted senior engineers of the Water Board and TTE Consultants, New Delhi to conduct CCTV survey of the pipeline. The engineers and consultants during the survey of the sewer pipeline have reported that RCC pipeline inside was vulnerable with reduction in thickness in the crown portion and infiltration of water taking place through joints and concluded that the pipeline may collapse. They suggested suitable rehabilitation by taking up appropriate trenchless technology.
