HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) now plans to geotag sewerage lines and manholes. The geotagging is expected to help the board effectively attend to sewerage overflows, repair and replacement of manhole covers, conduct preventive maintenance and maintain assets tracking on GIS flatform.

The Board is going ahead with the geotagging despite there being some confusion regarding the exact number of manholes in the city.. According to its estimates  there are two lakh manholes while MAUD minister K Taraka Rama Rao has claimed there are at least four lakh manholes.

To facilitate the geotagging, the HMWS&SB will engage a service provider to conduct a detailed study on sewer manholes in the existing sewer network. It has invited expressions of interest from firms to conduct this study and develop requisite tools and infrastructure for the geotagging.

HMWS&SB Director (Operations) G Rameshwar Rao said the selected service provider should propose a comprehensive solution for survey of sewerage line and manholes and propose tools for the survey including supply of infrastructure such as hardware, software licensing for Maps, GIS application, software for integrating with HMWS&SB existing applications.
The service provider should develop a solution to capture manhole attribute information based on information of sewerage staff. After collection of details, the survey details must be integrated by the application with HMWS&SB server.
