HYDERABAD: A Hyderabad man who attempted to carry foreign currency illegally has been arrested by the sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Thursday, just before he boarded a flight to Dubai.

Officials of DRH said, an air passenger hailing from Hyderabad was intercepted during late on Wednesday night after he cleared immigration and security checks and was just about to board an Emirates flight heading to Dubai.

The officials said, “On examination of his baggage, foreign currency in the form of UAE Dirhams, Saudi Riyals and Omani Riyals was found bundled among newspapers. The value of the currency is about Rs 57 lakh. The passenger, on interrogation, stated that the currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers in the city and does not belong to him. It was being carried to Dubai on behest of a private person to deliver to another person.”

As the passenger obtained the foreign currency illegally in violation of FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) and attempted to export the currency by violating Customs Act, the passenger has been arrested. Further investigation in the case is on, said the DRI sleuths.
